Anti-doping work

On January 1, 2021, the latest version of the World Anti-Doping Code took effect. At the same time, Antidoping Sweden AB (ADSE) began its mission as the national anti-doping organization for Sweden. This means that the sports movement’s anti-doping work is now a shared responsibility between the RF and ADSE. As always in the context of anti-doping, a heavy responsibility rests on the individual.

MHFS adheres to the rules and guidelines that can be found here:

Members are encouraged to ask The Safety and Security Group for more information about doping. MHFS tries to work preemptively and the spread of information is a large part of this.

Handling doping issues

Reporting a doping issue

If a member sees a suspected doping situation, they are required to inform the safety and security group, a trainer or a member of the board. This can be done either verbally or in writing to either the entire group or to a member of it. The case is then handed over to Antidoping Sverige, where you can also report directly.

You are subject to the doping rules

Riksidrottsförbundets (RF) statutes and anti-doping regulations cover all members of a sports association that is connected to the RF via its specialidrottsförbund (SF). As a member of a sports association, you are obliged to know the doping rules, for example WADA’s doping list, exemption rules and the obligation to submit to a doping control. Leaders and other officials in the club are also covered by the doping rules, but then it’s about them not being allowed to participate in athletes being doped or making it difficult for doping control officials during doping control.

You can be tested for doping

All athletes who are members of a sports association connected to the RF can be tested for doping. RF takes nearly 4,000 doping tests per year. 80 percent of Swedish doping controls are carried out at elite level, but lower-level athletes and sometimes exercisers can also be taken out for doping control. There should be no free zone at a lower level and it has been shown that the societal problem of anabolic androgenic steroid abuse is mainly among strength training exercisers.

The doping list applies globally

Doping refers to the use of substances or methods that are prohibited according to the list established by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). WADA’s doping list constitutes an international standard in the ”World Anti-Doping Program”. Most international specialist sports federations are affiliated to the World Anti-Doping Code, which is the doping regulatory framework that applies, which means that WADA’s doping list also applies worldwide.

The red-green list is a good aid

The red-green list of drugs classified as doping is available on ADSE’s website. It is not a doping list in the legal sense, but should be seen as an aid to avoid medicines that contain substances classified as doping. You can easily search for medicines in the Red-green list. When searching, you get a red or green answer for the drug you enter – red is classified as doping, while green is permitted.

You can apply for an exemption

The dispensation rules have been added so that athletes who, for medical reasons, must use drugs classified as doping, will be able to practice their sport. In Swedish sport, the dispensation rules are adapted to the requirements of the World Anti-Doping Code. Elite athletes must normally apply for a dispensation for treatment with drugs classified as doping. Athletes at a lower level and exercisers who may never compete are covered by a general dispensation that gives them the right to use drugs without an application if there is a medical need. Complete exemption rules and application documents can be found here:

Risks with dietary supplements

RF advises against the use of dietary supplements on other than purely medical grounds. Many preparations on the market are insufficiently controlled and it has been shown that they may contain substances classified as doping and harmful to health. There is no scientific support for the fact that athletes with a normal diet need extra nutritional supplements, many elite athletes therefore completely refrain from nutritional supplements. Investing in diet is always a better choice than eating pills and powders. Here you can read more about the risks of dietary supplements:
